How to make a snuffle mat

In my blog, 7 easy enrichment ideas for your dog, I mentioned snuffle mats. A fun way to feed your dog instead of a bowl. A snuffle mat works like long grass, it makes full use of your dog's nose, requiring them to sniff out the food. Sniffing is a natural behaviour that helps slow down eating and is a relaxing activity.

What you'll need:

- rubber or plastic nonslip mat with holes in (e.g. sink mats, floor mats)

- fleece blankets (I got mine from a pound shop)

- scissors

Instructions

Step 1: Cut fleece into strips around 8 inches long by 2 inches

Step 2: Thread the fleece strips through the holes and tie a knot. The smaller the holes the more compact your mat will be. If you have different coloured fleece (and the patience!) you can make some fun patterns. Continue filling in the mat until you're happy with how dense the fleece is.

Step 3: Add some treats to the snuffle mat and let your dog sniff! To begin with, put the treats on top of the mat so it's easy for them to sniff out. As they get more confident, you can bury the treats further into the fleece to make it more challenging.

Optional step: If your mat is really big you can cut it into two smaller mats before adding the fleece, this is handy if you have a multi dog household or just want two for the price of one!
